訳が違うと...

今朝ほどから(笑)、「忍耐」ということについて考えていた。そしたら、違うことにひっかかってしまって、気になって、色々調べてしまった。

昔、中高時代の毎週の暗誦聖句にもとりあげられていた箇所。
「それだけではなく、艱難をも喜んでいる。なぜなら、艱難は忍耐を生み出し、忍耐は練達を生み出し、練達は希望を生み出すことを知っているからである。そして、希望は失望に終わることはない。」(ローマ人への手紙5章）

ここが、新共同訳「新改訳」*1聖書では
「そればかりではなく艱難さえも喜んでいます。それは艱難が忍耐を生み出し、忍耐が練られた品性を生み出し、練られた品性が希望を生み出すと知っているからです。この希望は失望に終わることがありません。」となっていました。
う〜む、練られた品性って...。何？
ていうのが、気になっちゃったんですねぇ。

英語ではどうなっているかというと、

その１：But we glory also in tribulations, knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience trial; and trial hope; and hope confoundeth not,

その２：And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed

その３：And we also rejoice in troubles, because we know that trouble produces endurance, endurance brings God's approval, and his approval creates hope. This hope does not disappoint us,

その４：Not only that, but we even boast of our afflictions, knowing that affliction produces endurance, and endurance, proven character, and proven character, hope, and hope does not disappoint,

その５：Trouble produces patience, patience produces tested virtue, and tested virtue produces hope.

英語の聖書にもいろいろあるのね。一番最後の "tested virtue" てのが、「練られた品性」なんだろうなぁ。
その２の "experience" 経験 というのもなかなかいいですね。経験値をあげてくカンジで。

…いや、だいたいわかった。字句にこだわるのはやめよう。なんとなくイメージできてきたから。
